Library to Host Storytime Featuring Ithaca College Music Fraternity




Tompkins County Public Library will host members of Mu Phi Epsilon for a special musical storytime Saturday, September 24 at 11 a.m. in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room.

Children and families of all ages are invited to join students from Mu Phi Epsilon, a professional and co-educational music fraternity at Ithaca College, for this special program.  Fraternity members will read and provide musical accompaniment to “Zin, Zin, Zin!: A Violin” by Lloyd Moss.  Following the reading, members will offer an "Instrument Petting Zoo," in which children can look, listen, touch, and play with a wide range of musical instruments.

Library to Host ESL Snack and Chat


Beginning September 28, non-native English speakers are invited to attend Tompkins County Public Library’s weekly “ESL Snack and Chat Conversation Groups.”

These informal, drop-in sessions will be held each Wednesday through November 16, from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Library’s BorgWarner Community Room and offer a relaxed setting for practicing conversation and listening skills. Snack and Chat meetings will help participants discover and access language-learning resources at the Library and in the community and provide a forum for information sharing.

Snack and Chat sessions are free and open to individuals with the desire to improve their 
English or willing to serve as conversation partners for others. Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.

Library to Offer Family Science Program


Tompkins County Public Library and Cornell University’s Center for Materials Research with host “Unknown Powders” Saturday, September 10 from 1-2 p.m. in the Library’s BorgWarner Community Room.
 
Families will explore how powders react when you add a chemical indicator (vinegar, baking soda solution, iodine, and pH indicator solution) to them. Using their observations, they will try to figure out what two powders are in an unknown mixture.

Families Learning Science Together is a free program designed to help children develop an early love of science through hands-on participation. These programs are offered at the Library on the second Saturday of each month.

Families Learning Science Together programs are free and open to the public, but space is limited. To register, email ccmr_outreach@cornell.edu. Please include the name and age of all children in the email.

Library to Screen “Embrace of the Serpent”


Tompkins County Public Library will host a screening of “Embrace of the Serpent,” Wednesday, August 24 at 6 p.m. in the BorgWarner Community Room.

This 2015 acclaimed adventure drama tells two related, though unique stories.  Set in 1909 and 1940 both stories follow Karamakate, and Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his tribe, as he accompanies scientists, Theodor Koch-Grunberg and Richard Evans Schultes on their hunt for the rare yakruna, a sacred plant.

Directed by Ciro Guerra, “Embrace of the Serpent,” is based in part on the diaries of the scientists and has received critical acclaim for its striking cinematography and engrossing story.

This screening is free and intended for an adult audience.

Library to Host Dance Party Storytime




Children of all ages and their families are invited to wiggle, hop and shake at Tompkins County Public Library’s “Dance Party Storytime,” Thursday, August 18 at 11 a.m. in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room.

This free program is open to children of all ages and abilities and will include stories, songs and lots of movement. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required.
