Sometimes
the truth really is better than fiction, and Tompkins County Public Library
will explore some of these fascinating real-life stories with its newly launched
“Truth Be Told: Non-Fiction Book Club.”
This
free, quarterly club will offer a judgment-free environment for adults to share
insights and explore themes of selected works of non-fiction.
The
first meeting of “Truth Be Told” will be held March 3 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
and feature a discussion of “The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and
Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics,” by Daniel James
Brown.
“The
Boys in the Boat” recounts the story of the University of Washington’s 1936 eight-oar
crew team and the drive and determination that led them to gold at the Berlin
Olympics. This acclaimed book follows these unlikely rowers--
working-class sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers—on their journey to
the podium, and captures the spirit and sacrifice they embodied as they faced
elite rivals from around the world, including the German crew rowing for Adolph
Hitler.
Limited
copies of “The Boys in the Boat” are available for club members. To
reserve a copy, register for “Truth Be Told” by contacting Tom Burns at tburns@tcpl.org or Stephen Salino at ssalino@tcpl.org.
