Tompkins
County Public Library will host Dr. William Shang for “Weight Training to Avoid
Diabetes,” an informative presentation on the health benefits of strength
training for adults, Wednesday, February 8 at 2 p.m. in the BorgWarner
Community Room.
Author
of “The FIRST Program: Fighting Insulin Resistance with Strength Training,”
Shang, is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine and has served
as a flight surgeon, general practitioner, coroner’s physician and pathologist.
He is a recognized advocate for exercise and strength and conditioning training
and currently serves as laboratory director for the student health centers at

Shang’s
library program will offer insight into the exercise recommendations of the
American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, explore why
strength training is important for individuals of all ages and look at how it
helps combat high blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels, improves
heart function, prevents mental decline and depression, reverses slowing
metabolisms and reduces the risk of obesity.
This
program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Tom Burns
