Library, League of Women Voters to Partner for Program on Fake News

Tompkins County Public Library and the Tompkins County League of Women Voters will present, “Is That Really True? Facts or Fake News,” Monday, October 23 at 7 p.m. in the BorgWarner Community Room.

A panel discussion featuring Neill Borowski, executive director of “The Ithaca Journal”, Cornell University Research Librarian Michael Engle and Chris Sperry, director of curriculum and staff development for Ithaca College’s Project Look Sharp media literacy program, “Is That Really True?” will offer insight and information on evaluating the validity of news sources in the digital age.

Panelists will offer a 15-minute introduction on the subject of fake news based on their expertise and experience, with Borowski offering a look at news from the journalist’s point-of-view, Sperry offering advice for building media literacy and Engle sharing insight about a website he developed, http://guides.library.cornell.edu/c.php?g=620317&p=4321378, to help people determine the legitimacy of news sources. Following their presentations, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions about the subject.

This event is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Carrie Wheeler-Carmenatty at cwheeler@tcpl.org or (607) 275-1548.
