Tompkins County Public Library will host a discussion of the acclaimed novel, “The Hate U Give,” during the upcoming meeting of its Young Adult Book Club, a monthly book discussion group for middle and high school students, Wednesday, April 19 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room.
Written by Angie Thomas, “The Hate U Give” follows 16-year-old
Starr Carter as she navigates two worlds—the poor neighborhood where she lives
and the halls of the upper-class suburban prep school she attends. Her worlds
collide, however, when she witnesses the shooting of her unarmed childhood best
friend, Khalil, by a police officer. As the only witness to the crime,
Starr is forced to consider the life or death consequences of telling what happened.
“The
Hate U Give” has received critical acclaim and was so desired that 13
publishing houses took part in a bidding war over publishing rights. The book
has been optioned for a movie starring Amandla Stenburg of “The Hunger Games”
fame.
Free copies of the book are available for new and returning Club
members at the Youth Services Reference Desk.
Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
