Library to Host Solar Eclipse Storytime

Tompkins County Public Library will celebrate the upcoming solar eclipse with a special “Solar Eclipse in the Park” all-ages storytime, Monday, August 21 at 12:30 p.m. in Dewitt Park.

“Solar Eclipse in the Park” is a perfect opportunity for families to celebrate this rare cosmic event through stories, a solar system felt board and crafts for children and teens. Attendees are welcome to stay in the park following the storytime to view the partial eclipse.

A limited supply of special eclipse-viewing glasses, approved by the National Council for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute, will be available at the Library’s service desks in the days leading up to the event and at the storytime. Glasses must be worn when viewing the eclipse.

TCPL has partnered with the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) and its NASA@ My Library initiative, which are providing resources and STEM activities to libraries across the nation related to the eclipse. More than 1,000 libraries from across the country are celebrating the solar eclipse with hands-on programming, viewing parties and related activities

In the event of rain, TCPL’s storytime will be held in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room.

For more information, contact the Library’s Youth Services Department at (607) 272-4557 extension 275.
