In recognition of Black History Month, Tompkins County Public Library will host a free screening and discussion of the award-winning film, “The Throwaways,” Monday, February 15 at 6 p.m. in the BorgWarner Community Room.
Produced
and directed by Bhawin Suchak and Ira McKinley, “The Throwaways” explores the
impact of mass incarceration, racial profiling and police brutality on the
black community, as witnessed by McKinley, a United States Air Force veteran,
who overcame homelessness and incarceration to become an accomplished filmmaker
and advocate for social justice.
“The
Throwaways” serves as a call to action against the notion that marginalized
groups are disposable and chronicles McKinley’s efforts to mobilize his Albany
community to fight for change.
Following
the Library screening, McKinley will answer questions about the film and his
current efforts to promote community conversations and action.
This
program is open to the public. For more information contact Tom Burns at tburns@tcpl.org or Carrie Wheeler-Carmenatty
