Tompkins County
Public Library, in collaboration with the Family Reading Partnership, has
announced “Babies Belong at the Library,” a county-wide initiative to encourage
an early love of reading and libraries by providing every baby born in Tompkins
County with a free library card.
The program, which
launches April 12, was developed by the Family Reading Partnership, TCPL, and
librarians from Dryden, Groton, Lansing, Newfield and Trumansburg, in an effort
to connect babies and parents with library resources and programs. Parents
are encouraged to make the library one of the first places they visit with
their baby.
Infants born at Cayuga
Medical Center will receive their “Baby’s First Library Card” along with a bag
of reading-related resources provided by the Family Reading Partnership prior
to being discharged from the hospital. Families of babies born before
April 12, babies born at home, or families adopting babies, can pick up their
card and bag at any of the six libraries in Tompkins County. Cards will
be activated during the baby’s first library visit.
In celebration of
their collaboration, all six libraries have also agreed to waive fines on all
returned board books.
