Middle-graders are invited to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math through lively book discussions and hands-on activities during Tompkins County Public Library’s monthly STEAM Book Club.
Continuing
Wednesday, July 27 with a discussion of “Operation Redwood” by S. Terrell French, the
STEAM Book Club will encourage area students to improve their understanding of
current core competencies through critical thinking and book-related
activities.
Set
in Northern California, “Operation Redwood” follows a group of young friends
who conspire to save a grove of redwoods from being cut down by an investment
company. Packed with adventure, humor and fascinating characters,
“Operation Redwood” offers an important message about environmental activism
and nature.
The
club will meet in the Library’s Thaler/Howell Programming Room at 3:45 p.m. for
discussion and refreshments. Following the discussion, participants will be
lead on a walking tour by Ithaca’s City Forester, Jeanne Grace.
The
STEAM Book Club is free and open to all third, fourth and fifth graders.
Free
copies of “Operation Redwood” can be picked up at the Youth Services Reference
Desk. Participants who would like to join the walking tour will need a signed permission
slip.
