Library, AAUW Partner for Program on “Allegheny Dream”

Tompkins County Public library and the Ithaca Branch of the American Association of University Women will host author Lisa Harris for a discussion of her haunting family novel, “Allegheny Dream,” Saturday, November 19 at 11 a.m. in the Library’s BorgWarner Community Room.

Set in rural Pennsylvania, “Allegheny Dream,” follows three generations of women as they fight to overcome the trauma of cruelty, sudden death and the destruction of the valleys surrounding their mountain home. Myth and reality blend in sharply etched scenes that capture the beauty and pain of uncovering the past.

The author of “Geechee Girls,” Harris taught at Ithaca High School and Ithaca College.  She is currently a school administrator and associate fellow at Bard College’s Institute of Writing and Thinking.  “Allegheny Dream,” is her second novel.

This program is free and open to the public.

AAUW is the primary national organization promoting education and equity for women and girls. Library to Host Special Halloween-Themed Firefighter Storytime

Tompkins County Public Library will host Ithaca Firefighter Thomas Basher, Jr. for a special Halloween Storytime, Monday,  October 31 at 3 p.m. in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room.

Children and families are invited to come in costume as Basher shares Halloween stories and tips for staying safe while trick-or-treating.

Snacks and crafts will be provided.

Library to Offer Sex Education and Communication Strategies for Parents

Tompkins County Public Library, in partnership with The Advocacy Center and Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes will present “Let’s Talk About ‘The Talk,’” a free program for parents of children of all ages, Monday, October 24 at 7 p.m. in the BorgWarner Community Room.

This program will offer information about sex, sexuality, abuse prevention and healthy communication strategies for talking to children and teens about issues related to sexual health.

Parents of young children will learn about safety, abuse prevention and appropriate touch.  While parents and caregivers of teens will discuss tools for talking about sex, safe sex, consent, and dating violence.

Library Offers Computer and Download Training

Tompkins County Public Library offers free training sessions, by appointment, for basic computer and internet skills and downloading digital content to computers, smartphones and tablets. 

Digital content services currently available through TCPL include:

Hoopla – Streaming movies and television shows

OverDrive – eBooks and eAudiobooks

RBdigital Magazines - eMagazines

Training sessions are held at the Information and Learning Services Reference Desk, on the following days:

    Mondays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

    Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to Noon

    Thursdays from 11 a.m. to Noon

    Fridays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Participants will need a valid Library card and password to access digital content.

Library to Host Young Adult Book Club

Area middle and high school students are invited to join Tompkins County Public Library’s Wednesday, October 19 Young Adult Book Club for a discussion of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

Being held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Library’s Thaler/Howell Programming Room, the Young Adult Book Club will be led by an Ithaca High School senior and include book-inspired activities.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Free copies of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” are available for Club participants to pick up at the Library’s Youth Services Reference Desk.
