Tompkins County Public Library will celebrate Banned Books Week 2016 by encouraging patrons to borrow a “surprise” banned book.
From
September 26 through October 1, library patrons will find a display of
challenged books near the library’s main entrance. Each book will be
wrapped in brown paper with a short description of why it was challenged.
Patrons can check out the books, unwrap them and celebrate their freedom to read.
“Banned
Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read” is the American Library
Association’s annual celebration of free and open access to information.
By highlighting continued efforts to remove or restrict certain titles from
public circulation, Banned Books Week draws attention to the dangers of
censorship. While books have been, and continue to be “banned” or
challenged, Banned Books Week serves to recognize that--in the majority of
cases—challenged titles have remained available due to the efforts of
librarians, teachers, students and community members who speak out for the
freedom to read.
