Bakers of all ages are invited to showcase their skills during Tompkins County Public Library’s inaugural Literary Cupcake Contest, Saturday, August 12.
Bakers
should drop off their literary-themed cupcakes between 11 a.m. and noon in the
Library’s BorgWarner Community Room. A panel of judges from TCPL’s Junior
Library Advisory Council will select winners at 1 p.m. from a variety of
categories, including aesthetics, taste, creativity, adherence to theme and use
of sustainable (locally sourced or vegan) ingredients.
Prizes
include gift certificates to local businesses, Buffalo Street Books, GreenStar,
Life’s So Sweet Chocolates and more. Winners from each category, as well as a
best overall and runner-up, will be awarded. Bakers are permitted to enter
multiple categories, however, they are only eligible to receive one prize.
This
event is free. To participate, bakers should submit six of the same cupcake
along with a printed copy of their recipe. Cupcakes in the Sustainability category
will be awarded points based on the following criteria: 0 for no vegan/local
ingredients, one if less than half of the ingredients are locally-sourced or
vegan, and two points if more than half of the ingredients are local/vegan.
Cupcake
lovers of all ages and decorating experience will also have an opportunity to
decorate and eat free cupcakes while waiting for the judging to take place.
